JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PUBLIC
LIBRARY AND RESEARCH CENTRE

   Jawaharlal Nehru Public Library and Research Centre, established in the year 1985 at Kannur, cater to the needs of students, research scholars and the public in general. This Research Centre is run by a charitable society registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The District Collector, Kannur, is the Ex-officio Chairman of the Society.
  The Library was originally housed at Mahatma Mandiram on a rental basis. Thereafter Government of Kerala assigned 50 cents of land in the heart of the town on Yogasala Road for construction of own building for Library and Research Centre. In the year 1988 Govt of Kerala contributed an amount of Rs 5 lakh, from the proceeds of the State Film Award Nite to construct a permanent building on the allotted land. The library was shifted to the new building at the present site in 1995

The library has a collection of more than 20,000 books in English, Malayalam and Hindi on various subjects, which covers a variety of subjects viz. Economics, History, Languages, Science & Technology, Public Administration, Management, Law, Phylosophy, Literature etc. The data is fully computerized. Subscriber members can have access to the stock register to locate their choice of books through digital inventory.

The management of this Library is vested with a Governing body headed by the District Collector. The body consists of 21 elected members with the District Collector as the Chairman. The Mayor, Kannur Corporation and the President of District Panchayth, Kannur shall be special invitees. The Governing Body periodically elects a team of office bears consisting of Working Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, two joint secretaries and treasurer for smooth conduct of activities. Elected team will normally be in office for a period of three years.
There are about 1000 members and 1000 subscribers in this institution. The management of this Library is vested in a Governing body headed by the District Collector. The body consists of 21 elected members and 8 Ex- officio members, including Dist Collector, Muncipal Chairman and Dist Panchayat President, District Information Officer etc.

   The reading section of the library is utilized by large number of readers, everyday. The reading room is open from 8.30 AM to 7 PM on all days except on very important holidays. There is a separate reading section for women and children. All important Dailies, Magazines and publications in Malayalam and English are subscribed for the library, on regular basis. Apart from promoting readership, the organization is in to various social activities. Having named after Panditji, special programmes are organized to mark the occasion of Nehru Jayanthi. All Kerala Book Exhibition, competitions for school and college students in Elocution, Essay writing, Quiz, Painting etc. are some of the items taken up, every year. Lectures by people of eminence on various topics and a host of cultural programmes are also organised. Coaching Classes were organized consistently for five years, to enable the candidates to prepare for the Preliminary examination of Civil Service. Sessions were also held on career guidance. Dr.Alexander Jacob, IPS, DGP (Rtd) and Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan were among the eminent resources persons, made available to extend proper guidance to students and their parents on career related matters. As part of the developmental activities, an auditorium with 600 seating capacity, has been constructed on the first floor of the Library building with the Local Area Development Funds of Sri.Mullapally Ramachandran Ex.MP and Sri A.P.Abdullakutty, Ex.MP. Funds made available by Sri.K.Sudhakaran .M.P. were also utilized for setting up physical infrastructure. We allow the public to use the Auditorium for their meeting and other purposes on payment of nominal charges towards maintenance and cleaning. An Open Air Auditorium to seat a strength of 200 is also available on the premises. Mini Hall and a conference room on the ground floor, that can house 60 persons and 25 persons, respectively are also set up to promote social activities. Jawahar Library building has by now become an important centre of all socio – cultural activities in the town.
